For the fourth straight year, the city of Montreal will be participating in International Car Free Day, known locally as “En Ville, Sans Ma Voiture!” or “In Town, Without My Car!” by transforming its downtown core into a pedestrian paradise.

CAMPUS: Recycling documentary to raise awareness
McGill alumni Jodie Martinson and Emmanuel Cappellin, both Arts 2006 graduates, worked over the summer to prepare a 30-minute documentary on the state of recycling at McGill that will premiere in the Lev Bukhman room this Thursday. The film also seeks to determine who is responsible for what they describe as McGill’s failures with respect to recycling and to propose long term solutions for individuals and for the administration.
NATIONAL: Schools quit rankings
Some of Canada’s largest research universities delivered a pointed message to the editors of Maclean’s magazine last month when they announced in an open letter that they would no longer assist the publication in preparing its annual university rankings issue.
CAMPUS: McGill unveils Medical Centre
The transition from medical textbooks to a clinical setting often leads to mistakes by well-meaning but inexperienced medical students. To try to help them learn in a risk-free setting, McGill has opened a Medical Simulation Centre to offer hands-on training.
CAMPUS: McGill to STOP laptop theft
As more students choose to bring laptops to campus the opportunities for thieves to take them has increased. Last year over 120 laptops were reported stolen by students and unfortunately for laptop owners, the numbers are increasing. This is one reason why Security Services launched a new laptop tracking program for students in partnership with Connecticut-based Security Tracking of Office Property (STOP).
CAMPUS: 4Floors postponed
The recent events at Dawson College caused the Students’ Society to reschedule the traditional September 4Floors party in Shatner last week. However, after low attendance in previous years, many are wondering if 4Floors can ever be revived to its previous glory days.
CITY: Cessna lands on Parc
Tam-tams participants quickly became eyewitnesses to a private Cessna airplane safely landing on Avenue du Parc near the George-Étienne Cartier monument at 4 p.m. Sunday.
@MAC: New library slowly revealing itself
Students are finally beginning to see some results of the summer’s renovations on the Macdonald Campus Library. Only the upper level of the library, which houses the print journal collection, the photocopiers and some computers, was made available to students after being closed since May 1.
EDUCATION: University of Toronto moves towards higher tuition fees, fewer undergrad spaces
On Thursday, members of the University of Toronto’s highest governing body voted overwhelmingly in favour of adopting a long-term policy framework that is closely modeled on research-intensive universities in the United States. The policy document, entitled ‘”Towards 2030,” was first tabled by U of T President David Naylor.
CAMPUS: Controversy over travel directive continues
After working to send McGill student teachers to Indonesia for over a year, professor Fiona Benson was “gobsmacked” to learn that the university’s new travel directive would force the trip’s cancellation less than a month before departure. “I was given a green light to go to Indonesia by [Faculty of Education Dean Hélène Perrault] and by the administration,” said Benson, who is also the director of the Faculty of Education’s Office of Student Teaching.
