Know Your Athlete: Qadr Spooner

“[Football] is something my mom forced me to be a part of,” Spooner said. “So many benefits came after that—friendships, it helped me focus on school and do better in school; if you got bad marks you got kicked off the team [in high school….] It has just helped my life out so much. It keeps you from doing bad stuff [….] You meet so many great individuals and great peers.”

However, a long Stanley Cup-winning NHL career was never a given. Kompon first pursued  a professional career, moving to Germany and competing in the ECHL. He eventually gave up his playing career to put his McGill education degree to use to teach high school mathematics at Loyola high school. He combined this with coaching the McGill Redmen hockey team–first as an assistant, then as co-head coach.

McGill Martlets in first, Redmen in second at McGill Open cross country meet

The McGill Redmen and Martlet cross country teams began their seasons last Saturday morning at the 2016 McGill Open. 550 runners total representing 24 men’s and women’s teams from universities and CEGEPs across Quebec competed on the Mount Royal course.
