What are your top priorities for this year?
Look over some of the different policies that are germane to students: for example the grievance process and the Code of Student Conduct. One of the ways that I’m going to do that is to form multiple working groups that will be charged with looking at the general code and accessing where there are some basic flaws … any gaps missing.
How do you plan on strengthening student voices in debates?
[One thing we’ve been working on is] an incredible project which follows up on the Diversity Survey, which came out of the Deputy Provost’s office last year. This new project will look into perceptions of discrimination on campus. The Deputy Provost’s office has been working with SSMU on the inception of the project, and we’ve developed multiple focus groups that will target racialized groups: East Asian, South Asian, black. We’re really trying to ensure that we have students that aren’t necessarily involved in SSMU; their points of views are just as important.
Any challenges you foresee?
It’s in the nature of the position; no matter how prepared you are, there’s always an issue that will arise. It’s really about being quick on your feet and dealing with it as quickly as possible.
